About this deal

The group reaches the ice caves, where indeed there is a pile of canned goods, and are immediately crestfallen to find that they have no means of opening them. It takes place in a dystopian world where a mastermind artificial intelligence named "AM" has destroyed all of humanity except for five people, whom he has been keeping alive and torturing for the past 109 years by constructing metaphorical adventures based on each character's fatal flaws. One hundred and nine years later, four men and one woman (Benny, Gorrister, Nimdok, Ted, and Ellen) live in an endless underground complex created by AM, one of the only habitable places left on Earth. Still, one could accept the setting as a sort of hell and here is where the potential of the story was, and here is where it ultimately failed. Notions of cannibalism (such as the bodies not having been buried and it being blamed on the machine), quarrel and violence would make it even more effective and would make his paranoia of having been hated by them a either more feasible or at least another excuse for him to murder them.

There isn’t any point in trying to escape because there isn’t anything left on Earth—AM already killed the rest of the human race and is now immense enough to encompass the entire planet. The machine's actions and torture inflicted on what remains of humanity is certainly vile, and for the most uses this warped, sadistic form of almost irony in how it alters certain situations for the characters to torture them. In the mode of Franz Kafka, we are meant to be touched or changed in some way by this work, for what else is the purpose of art? As to the idea that computers can be taught to simulate emotions, that is possible, but WHY would you program a computer that had been built for a practical, logistical purpose to have emotions?

Also, I’m picking up some sexism in his inherent belief that women only have worth when they’re non-sexual.As for why it garnered such huge critical acclaim - perhaps people weren't used to sci-fi/horror/fantasy becoming a bit more philosophical and taking a look at existential issues? Created in the Image of God: The Narrator and the Computer in Harlan Ellison's 'I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream' ". One day, the American supercomputer, better known as the Allied Mastercomputer, gains sentience and absorbs the Russian and Chinese supercomputers into itself and redefines itself as simply AM ( Cogito ergo sum; I think, therefore I am). The action window is the largest part of the screen and is where the player directs the main characters through their adventures.
