All Sonos hardware, except for the controller, are variations on a little white box. The BR100 is the smallest box, measuring only 4.33″ by 4.33″ by 1.61″ high. The ZP90 measures 5.4″ by 5.4″ by 2.9″ high. The largest box, the ZP120 integrated amplifier, is only 7.3″ by 8.15″ by 3.4″ high. For aesthetes who feel that sound gear should be heard but not seen, the Sonos’ form factor is ideal. Since it relies on wireless WiFi connections instead of line-of-sight IR, Sonos units can be successfully sequestered inside cabinets, credenzas, or closets.

Note: Sonos has an installation CD that you can load up on your desktop or laptop to setup the system, but since this is an iPhone blog, I skipped this step and decided to with a full on iPhone-only setup. Talking of drivers, you’ll find no fewer than five inside the ZonePlayer S5 – you get two tweeters for high frequencies, two mid-range drivers and a single subwoofer to ensure that bass response is well taken care of. Each driver is powered by its own digital amplifier, while crossover duties are also kept in the digital domain thanks to Sonos’ custom DSP technology. Initially I attached the ZP90 ZonePlayer to my downstairs home theater and hooked up the ZP120 to a pair of Axiom 4B speakers in my workroom. After several weeks I relocated the ZP90 to my upstairs home theater and moved the ZP120 into my master bedroom/bathroom. Unlike some wireless systems, where changing the physical location of the components requires a complete re-setup, the Sonos system was up and running 30 seconds after re-installation.Otherwise, though, the Amp is designed to be more flexible than the Connect:Amp when it comes to powering third-party speakers, most notably in the increase in power from 55W to 125W. This makes it far more capable of powering bigger, more demanding speakers. My suggestion is that when you buy a new device (like Sonos for example), get the latest hardware available. Chances are it will be several years before it is end-of-life and then you will get another 5 years of further support,,,...and then (btw) the product still works fine, it is just not supported by the vendor if you have an issue. There are myriad streaming options should you value sound quality over the flexibility Sonos offers. You can stream music from your NAS device and other digital libraries using the Cambridge Audio MXN10, for instance, to get fantastic audio performance.
