About this deal

Slam Bradley is a PI hired to deliver a letter to Richard Wayne, only to wind up as the Wayne's bagman when it turns out their baby daughter Helen, aka the Princess of Gotham, is kidnaped. It was the kind of assignment that would send plenty of reviewers scrambling to give their two cents before they could even muster up a penny. Gotham City: Year One collects issues 1-6 of the DC Comics series written by Tom King, illustrated by Phil Hester, and colored by Jordie Bellaire.

In Gotham City Year One, Phil and I will take you to a noir drenched past, where the secrets that made Gotham become Gotham, the sins that made Batman become Batman are finally and violently revealed. Whites are described as rioting racists wanting only to do with people of the same complexity, while others are benign and logical in motivation. The opening’s brutality is visceral, as Slam’s narration about how he mostly just took whatever path in life was simplest is contrasted with bloodshed and violence. While it takes a bit of time to really get started, the plot’s mystery becomes genuinely intriguing in the back half of the story. While Gotham City of the early 1960s presents itself as an exemplar city with a low crime rate, Bradley's investigation quickly reveals the have-nots and the racial tensions that are suppressed and the police brutality that makes it so.

It’s a trip to the past that earnestly tries to tackle themes like segregation and child kidnapping without a superhero spin. Overall, Gotham City: Year One is a mostly great story that is held back by its messy connections to the titular city. The conflict is that the factory contaminates South Gotham's water supply, which would displace lower-income families from their neighborhood.Esse quadrinho me fez ficar grudado nele até eu entender todos os mistérios que ele estabelece e desbarata até a última página, mas também acaba deixando alguns na incumbência do leitor. There are even a couple of panels where Slam looks just like Humphrey Bogart, which I feel has to be intentional.

The writing here is fantastic and a must-read for fans of classic mystery and gritty noir as King once again knocks it out of the park! The veneer of respectability surrounding Gotham City has collapsed, and blood is in the streets when a black woman is blamed for killing the Wayne’s baby daughter. Graphic Novels Batgirl (comic) Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth (comic) Batman (comic) Batman ’66 (comic) Batman ’66 Meets the Man From U. Tom King continues his storied time with the Batman mythos with a descent into the titular city’s deep, dark and bloody history that lays the foundations of the Wayne family’s symbiotic relationship with Gotham while also telling a very human tragedy in the classic noir fashion. They present a noble and dignified exterior to the public, Slam quickly learns that it’s all a façade. It’s even heavily implied that Bruce Wayne isn’t a Wayne, and that he’s the grandson of Slam Bradley instead.
