The kit consists of two parts, either a white or black base (primer) and the XL Crackle paste for the top layer. The XL Crackle Paste is a structural paste for the production of cracks which appear as the paste dries. Allows for full control of crackle results based on thickness of application and application technique. Golden Crackle Paste is a thick, opaque cracking material designed to develop deep fissure-like cracks as it cures. Liquitex Crackle Paste can be used alone or mixed with acrylic colours to create a crackle texture on rigid painting surfaces.

Once dried, you can paint over with paint, such as our acrylics, oil paints or our H20 water mixable oils.It’s best to keep crackle paste on a supportive surface such as canvas, polymer clay board or wood using acrylic or oil paints. If you want to design surfaces that dont have cracks everywhere, you can fill in these parts with light structure paste. Crackle Paste can be used alone to create a stable, cracked surface onto which paint can be applied. This medium is opaque, so can't be applied over the top of existing work to give it a crackled appearance. Golden Crackle Paste is created from a mixture of acrylic and marble dust, which dried to a unique hard opaque white surface.Increasing film thickness will increase the tendency to crack and also the size of the cracks and platelets. Remember that only one additive should be used within a color mix as combining additives can compromise the paint film stability. The size and extent of the crackle pattern is dependent on many factors, including the thickness of application, and the environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air flow) during drying. In general, the Mont Marte crackle paste works better on larger areas because the paste has more surface area to shrink back to and ‘crackle’.Its unique ratio of specific solids and binders allows for a "controlled failure" to occur and the result is its tendency to crack. Watercolour isn’t really ideal for crackle paste as the paper that you’re using wouldn’t be strong enough to hold the thick paste.
