About this deal

We have selected compact cultivars for the tricolour plant, so would expect them to reach an ultimate height or around 1.5-2 metres (5-8ft) in the garden, depending on how hard you prune each year. Keep them at 3-4ft by growing in larger planters and pruning to near ground level before they start in to growth each spring. Climbing plants are used to cover arches, obelisks, pergolas, fences and buildings. They can also be used to cover up unsightly features and masonry. True climbers take up little ground space and are perfect for small gardens. Wall shrubs, on the other hand, require more ground space. is the size of pot commonly used for herbs. Herbaceous perennials are also sometimes sold in this size in early spring. This is an outstanding, easy to grow, versatile evergreen groundcover with a vigorous, wide-spreading growth habit and small, oval, glossy dark green leaves that take on a bronze to purplish cast during the winter. It becomes studded with masses of handsome, slightly fragrant, small white flowers in attractive clusters from May to June which are pink-tinged, flat-petalled and very attractive to bees. The flowers are followed by a prolific display of showy, bright, waxy red berries that persist well into the winter, attracting birds to the garden. Although these are the smallest pot size that we currently sell, they are still substantially larger than many online offerings. Measuring an approximate diameter of 13.5cm, they offer great value for money, especially if you have lots of beds and containers to fill. Our 1 litre pots are predominantly used for herbaceous varieties, which means that after a few weeks of good weather, you will be able to enjoy a handsome plant specimen, at a fraction of the cost. Phlox douglasii ‘White Admiral’ is a great example of a Litre Pot, a small but delightful addition to any garden. 1.5 Litre Pots:

Make sure you loosen the soil prior to planting. Most shrubs are tolerant of most soil types as long as it is fairly well draining. The type of soil that you will need will vary from climber to climber. Clematis, for example, tend to prefer soil that is moist, but well-drained. Hardiness will also vary from climber to climber, but tender plants should not be planted until the spring, and they should not be planted in an exposed area. Hardy climbers include ivy and Russian vine. Some varieties of clematis are hardier than others.

1.5 Litre Pots:

It has self-rooting tips which spread rapidly to form a dense, ground-hugging, weed suppressing carpet that makes efficient and attractive ground cover among other taller shrubs. Perfect for establishing on slopes and cascading over walls, its tolerance of a wide range of light and soil conditions also makes it an excellent choice for covering the bare ground beneath trees and tall shrubs. Climbers should be watered well during dry spells. In the spring months, application of a fertiliser that is high in potassium should be used to feed the plant. Mulch it with organic matter, but leave at least 10cm free of mulch around the bark so that it doesn’t rot. Most shrubs will grow happily in containers, but they will be much more demanding on feeding and watering than shrubs in the ground would be. They will also need potting on every couple of years so that they don’t suffocate or become stunted in their pot. Shrubs are deciduous or evergreen woody plants, and often provide fragrant flowers, berries and foliage. They are good for structural framework, and they can provide a wonderful shelter and food source for wildlife.

A lot of climbers have the natural tendency to climb, and won’t need supports or to be tied-in. Wall shrubs, however, don’t climb naturally but they can be trained to do so. If left untrained, wall shrubs will bush outwards and grow like normal shrubs. This is pretty much the size of a full grown shrub or small tree. Once planted it will look like it has been there for years. One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established. For deliveries the size of ours, this just doesn't make sense for us or for our international customers, and so we have made the difficult - but necessary - decision to stop selling our plants internationally. We do very much hope that this will be a temporary measure and look forward to resuming trading internationally in the future. Delivery Information Our 2L pots are ideal for the production of amenity plants grown for one year, most commonly used for our 2L herbaceous and shrub lines, this size is great as the plants are small enough to establish but large enough to make an impact when first planted. This is the size for semi-mature shrubs and small trees. They are good for large gardens and instant, dramatic impact. Our 2 litre pots have an approximate diameter of 17cm. This popular pot size is used across all our categories, from grasses to potted bulbs to ferns, as it allows us to offer a diverse range of plants which will supply instant impact. 3 Litre Pots: We offer a range of ‘feature size’ plants in 5-litre pots. These bigger plants are fantastic for providing immediate high impact colour in your garden, or placed in a pot on the patio as an instant feature plant. A wide range of perennials are available in 2-litre pots, particularly when you buy them earlier in the season before they have put on growth.

A 5L is Ideal for the production of bigger shrubs with a larger root capacity, these can be seen across our nursery but generally found within our garden centre sales. We refer to the size of pots by their volume capacity in litres. The below graphic gives an approximate measurement of the most common pot sizes that we use – think of the ones you’d find in your local garden centre!

2 Litre Pots:

The sizing is estimated but this will give a guideline and we have used a garden spade to show the scale reference This is the size that many nurseries use for 'specimen' plants. These are plants that were grown in 3 litres last year, have been moved into these larger pots, and then grown on for another year. This size is commonly used for roses. The pots tend to be deeper than the 3 litre ones as roses like to put their roots down. At crocus, we have over 30 different sizes of pots that plants and trees are grown in. Here is a simple guide to the different options (and some nice pics of Mike our webmeister). Evergreen climbers can also be planted in the autumn, but it is better to plant them in the spring if your garden is exposed. This allows them to become established before the cold weather comes.
