About this deal

The Sound of Thunder is the thrilling second novel from Wilbur Smith, one of the best and most beloved authors of the century. Monsoon follows the adventures of Hal's sons, William, Tom, Guy and Dorian. An Arab Corsair is ambushing merchant and war ships in the Indian Ocean and the English send Hal to contest him. The twin brothers, Tom and Guy, fall out over a woman and Guy leaves for India while William remains home in England. Dorian is captured by slavers and sold to the Prince of Oman, al-Malik, who adopts him as his son. There he meets Yasmini, one of the many daughters of the Prince. They fall in love and Dorian saves her from Zayn al-Din, another of the Prince's sons. Eventually Dorian (known as al-Salil, The Drawn Sword) and Yasmini run away, damned for committing incest. Many years of searching leave Tom tired of battle but by chance he faces Dorian in battle and almost kills him. Recognizing each other, they reunite and escape to Africa. The establishment of the Wilbur & Niso Smith Foundation in 2015 cemented Wilbur's passion for empowering writers, promoting literacy and advancing adventure writing as a genre. The foundation's flagship programme is the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize.

Kudos, Mr. Smith for this wonderful continuation to the series. I am hooked and cannot wait to see how the first collection of Courtney stories will end.

Sean and his son Dirk finally leave the wilderness and discover that a war is brewing between the English and the Boers. He meets and falls in love with a woman called Ruth and they conceive a daughter during a thunderstorm. Ruth runs away to return to her husband who is a soldier in the Boer War, but later, after Sean won many victories in the war, he befriends Saul, Ruth's husband. Saul is killed in battle and Sean, although feeling guilty, finds Ruth and marries her. The pace would do credit to a Porsche, and the invention is as bright and explosive as a fireworks display. Sunday Telegraph" Oh, no. I got three – three with three shots. The gunboys are bringing the others.’ Offhanded, taking as natural that at nine years of age he should be providing meat for the whole company, Dirk slouched down comfortably in the saddle, holding the reins in one hand and the other resting negligently on his hip in faithful imitation of his father. The commander of the Boers is Sean'sbrother-in-law, Jan-Paulus Leroux, brother of Katrina who died in “ When the Lion Feeds”. Sean and Jan-Paulus fight but eventually decide to leave each other alone. At noon he had sent for him and demanded an apology - and Dirk, uncrying, with lips and jaw set grimly, had refused it.

A thundering good' read is virtually the only way of describing Wilbur Smith's books." --The Irish Times

Another reason why I liked this book is that in each chapter, there is an emphasis on different characters, rather than only one character. In the first book of the series, there was an emphasis on only one character - Sean. Now there is importance on different characters in the book, including Garry, Jan Paulus, Saul, and Ruth. Smith's books always have a good amount of strife, betrayal, jealousy, hardship, tragedy and sacrifice that he writes into his characters. The Sound of Thunder is a story rich in these human frailties. This story is engrossing but at a little slower pace than some of the more adventure oriented books. Sean Courtney is central to the story. We also get to into the hearts and minds of the many characters that orbit in his universe. All in the elusive search of happiness, love, revenge and/or redemption. This creates a complex and intricate character interactions making the story fun to read. I particularly like the relationship between Sean and his Zulu friend/servant Mbejane. When they have been apart for some time, they greet each other by saying "I see you." This is a rich and complex relationship that I think could have been explored a little more.

A highly readable novel of history and adventure ... Wilbur Smith has a sense of character too. "Books and Bookmen" I’ll trust you as you trusted me. It is the second book in the Courtney Series and it is set several years after the first book, When the Lion Feeds, focusing around the Second Boer War. [1] [2] Plot [ edit ] Yeesh. It's amazing how... primitive this book felt. So old-fashioned in the writing style and outlook. The main character is Sean Courtney. In the beginning of the book he's returning from a years-long elephant hunt, loaded down with ivory that he will use for the enrichment of his family. He's also got his young son with him.Let us make the attempt.’ Sean encouraged him and walked his horse down the slope to intercept the caravan. Oh, no. I got three - three with three shots. He had raised the boy with a wagon as his home and the veld as his schoolroom, grown men his companions and authority over them as his undisputed right of birth.
